For beaches, picnics, and fun in the water, you have two options: head to Comal Park on the south shore of the lake, or Canyon Beach Park on the north shore. Both have an abundance of picnic sites and a swimming area, but at Comal, you will find boat ramps and a playground for little ones to enjoy, while at Canyon Beach, you will enjoy grills and over eight miles of trails for hiking and biking.
If you want a scenic view and don't mind a little exercise, hike up the hill to Overlook Park at the south end of Canyon Dam to get a sweeping view of the lake and the impressive man-made structure. Bring a picnic as a reward for your efforts and soak in the view a little longer.
South of the lake, you'll find Guadalupe Park along the river, where you'll enjoy hiking and trout fishing in the southernmost sustainable trout fishery in the nation.
Glimpse and learn about the ancient history of the area with a guided tour at Canyon Lake Gorge. Here you will witness dramatic vistas, fossils and dinosaur tracks, geologic formations, waterfalls, and lagoons. This area is protected, so a visit requires a guided tour - be sure to sign up in advance so you don't miss out!
You can also learn about the history at the Heritage Museum of Texas Hill Country. Their collection includes fossilized dinosaur tracks, historical farming equipment, Native American artifacts, and fossils from the time when this land was submerged by the ocean. You'll also learn about the construction of the dam more than half a century ago which shapes the landscape today.
There are a variety of restaurants and dining options located conveniently around your Canyon Lake cabin rental. Enjoy some traditional Italian food at Gennaro's Trattoria on the south side of the lake, or grab some pizza at the Italian Garden Restaurant on the north side. The Silver Sage Grille has an American, Cajun/Creole-inspired menu, and Granny D's is a casual spot with old-fashioned American cuisine. You can also grab something smoky and delicious at Baja BBQ Shack while you fuel up at the Marina, which also has a bar and a general store.
