With sweeping views of Blacktail Mountain Ski Area to the west and Flathead National Forest to the east, Lakeside's four miles of waterfront lie near the north end of Flathead Lake. Rising to an elevation of 2,910 feet, this charming community is bordered by two similar ones - the quaint village of Rollins to the south and Somers to the north. A short 14-mile trip up Highway 93 brings you to downtown Kalispell and the regional airport, and the artsy mountain town of Whitefish is only another 15 miles farther. Best of all, the breathtaking landscape of Glacier National Park begins just 51 miles northeast in welcoming West Glacier.
Summertime and bountiful sunshine bring all forms of watercrafts, sunbathers, swimmers, and anglers to the cool, brilliant blue waters of this massive, glacially-formed lake. When you stay in one of our Lakeside cabins, you'll find ample opportunities for boat tours and fishing charters, as well as scenic kayak and canoe trips, where you can visit the coves, inlets, and expansive open reaches of this nearly 200-square-mile lake.
Bring the whole family for a ride aboard the Far West - a massive lake cruise ship that departs daily from the Lakeside Marina. As an added bonus, all those who come aboard can bring their own coolers, beer (for the 21-and-over-crowd), picnic baskets, or grab a delicious entrée from any of the dockside restaurants.
When winter arrives, the town turns its focus to snow sports at nearby Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, which encompasses 1,000 acres of pristine national forest with an average snowfall of 250 inches. Uncrowded lift lines and powder-laden slopes combine for exceptional downhill skiing and snowboarding framed by stunning views of Glacier Park in the distance and the jagged peaks of the surrounding Mission, Whitefish, and Cabinet Mountain ranges.
When visiting northwest Montana, stopping by Glacier National Park is a must. Luckily, our Lakeside cabin rentals will have you from your front door to the west entrance in about an hour. Home to healthy populations of grizzly bears, moose, mountain goats, and a dozen other big game species roaming freely, these roughly 1,583 square miles of soaring peaks, glacier-carved lakes, and sprawling alpine meadows are some of America’s most wild and untamed lands.
Begin your visit with a drive along the iconic Going-to-the-Sun-Road, a scenic 50-mile road with hairpin turns at dizzying heights (6,646 feet at its highest point). Watch dramatic cliffsides ebb into breathtaking valleys as you pass over the Continental Divide, then park, lace up your hiking boots, and continue exploring on the Highline Loop or the Grinnell Glacier Trail – both challenging hikes with scenery that’ll leave you slack-jawed.
Powder hounds will have their share of fresh tracks only 14 miles west at Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, but a trip 37 miles north to Whitefish Mountain Resort yields even more options to keep the skis sliding all day. Here, you’ll find 105 trails at lengths of up to three miles, as well as five terrain parks and an impressive variety of both on-piste and glade skiing and snowboarding for all levels of experience.
Make memories that will last a lifetime on your next visit to northwest Montana and live large in Big Sky Country at one of our comfortable Lakeside vacation rentals.
