The sweet relief of a three-day weekend is on its way, and if you haven’t planned ahead, don’t worry—you’re in good company. Three-day weekends make for a great opportunity to explore new corners of the world, relax outdoors, and spend time with loved ones. Take advantage of your free time and snag a last-minute stay for a fun way to make memories.
We’ve combed through Vacasa’s reservation data to find our most popular destinations for three-day weekend getaways. All six spots are just a quick trip away from major metro areas and are ideal for a long weekend enjoying the great outdoors. So set your scene, plan your escape, and make sure you seize the (three-)day.
Unsurprisingly, this coastal city, just a 25-minute drive from Norfolk, topped the list for long-weekend jaunts. Vacation rentals here enjoy quick access to the beautiful beachfront, ocean views, and all the city’s exciting attractions. Nearby Sandbridge Beach is worth a visit too, especially if you’re looking for a quiet atmosphere or to fit in a few rounds of golf. Grab tickets to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, tie up a hammock at a state park, sink into some seafood at Chick’s Oyster Bar, and enjoy the view with a stroll around Cape Henry Lighthouse.
Just about a 2-hour drive from Portland are some of the most breathtaking mountain views you’ll find in the Pacific Northwest. Mt. Hood is nothing short of legendary, not only for Timberline Lodge’s cameo in The Shining, but also for the area’s vast assortment of outdoor activities. Spot waterfalls through the Columbia River Gorge, kayak or fish by the lake, take to the mountain bike trails, or pull up a chair for stargazing. During your stay, grab the perfect family photo with Mt. Hood in the backdrop, and (season-permitting) ski or snow tube your way around the slopes.
Fort Myers is a favorite weekend getaway for its pristine beaches, pet-friendly homes, and thorough list of things to do. Sunbathe on Fort Myers Beach or Bonita Beach while your kids comb the soft sand for shells, and be sure to stop by the Wonder Garden for a day amongst parrots and peacocks. Parents, there’s plenty of fun for you too—take a romantic stroll with your spouse down the boardwalk and over tidal pools at Lovers Key State Park, then head downtown to the River District where there's great dining, shopping, and bar-hopping to keep you entertained through your three-day weekend.
Nothing beats a breath of fresh air and a cool dip in the water. Make the most of your long weekend by relaxing on the shores of Deep Creek Lake—only a 2-hour drive from Pittsburgh or 3 hours from Baltimore. With 69 miles of shoreline and verdant forests full of hiking trails, your weekend trip is set. Bring a picnic to enjoy by the beach, catch up on a good read, or savor a quiet day of bass fishing. In the surrounding area, you’ll find boat and watersport rentals, ski resorts, state parks, and stunning golf courses.
In the mood for more of a city escape? Boise offers the perfect balance of outdoor activity and delights downtown. Walking the Boise River Greenbelt is a great way to enjoy the scenery while scoping out restaurants for dinner. Plan a day at the Idaho Botanical Garden, the Boise Zoo, or the Aquarium of Boise for more fun. If you’re visiting in the summer, stop by the Capital City Public Market for a sweet treat and a walk through the booths to start your day.
Keep warm-weather thrills at your fingertips, with Disneyland 30 minutes away and gorgeous beachfront just beyond your front door. Take a long weekend to explore all that Newport Beach has to offer: whale-watching tours, shopping malls, Balboa Fun Zone, Sherman Library & Gardens, and Balboa Pier. If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at surf lessons or book a sightseeing tour to Catalina Island. When in doubt, you can always kick back and relax by the water, cool drink in hand.
